Bath City Endure Crucial Defeat as Relegation Threat Looms

Bath City suffered a significant setback in their battle against relegation after a late strike by Slough’s Wiktor Makowski sealed a 1-0 defeat. Makowski capitalized on a rare defensive error between Charlie Binns and Kieran Parselle, deftly lobbing the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to net the match’s only goal.

Despite desperate late efforts, including a shot from Ruebin Sheppard that rattled the crossbar in added time, Bath City failed to break their scoring drought. This marks their third consecutive home game without a goal, compounded by the loss of key strikers Donovan Wilson and Alex Fisher due to injury, leaving the team struggling to find the quality finish in front of goal they desperately need.

Both squads faced challenges from numerous absences; Bath City and Slough each fielded debutants—Watford loanee Alfie Marriott for Slough and Erion Zabeli—who showed promise early on. Marriott was particularly impressive, making several crucial saves throughout the match.

The first half was marked by missed opportunities from both sides, with Bath’s Fisher narrowly denied and Slough’s Harvey Walker testing the keeper with a fierce strike. Bath’s lack of cohesion going forward became apparent as chances were squandered, including a poor first touch by Jordan Alves that wasted a promising break.

In the second half, the intensity remained high but chances were limited. Slough failed to extend their lead after Tyrique Clarke missed an open goal, while Bath’s attacking efforts were hindered further by Fisher’s injury and continued misfiring upfront.

The decisive moment came late when Dan Roth’s long ball bypassed Parselle, allowing Makowski to outwit Binns and score his 18th goal of the season. Bath’s frustration grew as Mitch Beardmore scuffed a long-range shot immediately after, reflecting the team’s mounting pressure and diminishing confidence.

The final minutes saw a surge of urgency from Bath, with Sheppard almost scoring an equalizer, curling a shot that struck the post and crossbar. Binns even pushed forward in a desperate attempt to replicate a previous late goal that earned a draw. Despite their efforts, Bath’s attack was ultimately thwarted by resolute defensive blocking, including a crucial save on the line by Johnny Goddard.

The loss leaves Bath City entrenched in the relegation zone, two points from safety, highlighting their season-long struggle to convert chances with only 31 goals scored in 32 games. Manager Darren Way voiced his frustration, calling for greater accountability and sharper attacking play.

“Players need to start taking a bit more accountability to stick the ball in the back of the net,” Way said. “We’re forever under pressure if we don’t score goals. We need more quality going into the box and better timing of runs. Eventually, it’ll change.”

As Bath City prepare to face Chelmsford next, the challenge is clear: secure vital wins to escape relegation and regain confidence in front of goal. Way remains hopeful, insisting, “I’m up for the fight.”
