Bath City Concede Late Goal as Weston Rise into Play-Off Contention

New Bath City manager witnessed familiar frustrations as his side conceded a last-gasp equalizer in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Eastbourne Borough at Connect Management Stadium on Saturday.

Despite trailing at halftime following Scott Bartlett’s early goal, Bath City fought back with goals from Josh Laqeretabua and Alex Fisher, showcasing resilience and attacking intent. However, Eastbourne’s Will Armitage sealed a share of the points with a decisive 94th-minute header, leaving both teams mired in relegation concerns.

The match, a critical encounter between the bottom two teams in the National League South, began energetically for Eastbourne. Goalkeeper Harvey Wiles-Richards made a stunning save from Quevin Castro’s early attempt, before Jack Jebb opened the scoring with a superbly curled shot in the sixth minute. Eastbourne maintained the pressure with threatening chances by Lee Angol and others, while Bath’s offensive efforts only materialized in the dying moments of the first half.

Bath City emerged determined after the break, equalizing on 51 minutes when Laqeretabua pounced on a rebound to finish at close range. Moments later, Alex Fisher secured the lead with a skillful finish from a free-kick delivery. Eastbourne pushed hard for an equalizer, but it was ultimately Bath’s defensive lapse that allowed Corbett’s free-kick to find Armitage, whose looping header evaded goalkeeper Charlie Binns in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Weston-super-Mare edged closer to the play-off spots with a hard-fought victory. Despite an early scare with Louis Britton hitting the post, Weston took the lead in the 38th minute courtesy of Britton’s finish, capitalizing on a loose ball after Scot Bennett’s effort was cleared. Early in the second half, loan signing Leo Pecover doubled the advantage with a powerful strike from the edge of the box. Though Eastbourne’s Matt Robinson pulled one back from a corner, Weston held firm to secure valuable points.

The weekend results underline the fiercely competitive nature of the National League South, where every goal and point can have profound implications for survival and promotion ambitions.
