Bath Christmas Market has recently been granted planning permission to extend its duration by an additional week, allowing the event to run up to 25 days annually. This decision was made by councillors at Bath and North East Somerset Council’s planning committee. Alongside the extended timeframe, the market’s footprint will enlarge to include Queen’s Square, Kingsmead Square, and Parade Gardens.
Despite this official approval, the council team behind the beloved market has clarified that there are no current intentions to lengthen the event beyond its usual 18 days or to utilise the newly permitted areas immediately. The Christmas Market is a major attraction, drawing over 440,000 visitors each year and contributing approximately £64 million to the local economy.
Most traders participating in the market hail from the South West, with 65% based in the Bath area. The demand for stall spaces is high enough that the council could fill the market twice over.

Council cabinet member Paul Roper addressed the planning committee, emphasising that “The larger area is not about flooding everywhere with chalets. It’s about giving the team the flexibility to think of new ideas and new creativity, and we need space to do that.”
The council envisions using the additional spaces to offer more diverse experiences such as dining, entertainment, family activities, and new retail opportunities. Mr Roper also highlighted that the extended timeframe would provide “flexibility” to adjust event dates when necessary.
Importantly, this planning permission is permanent, contrasting with the previous arrangement which required renewal every three years. According to Mr Roper, this permanent status will help traders make long-term investments in the market’s future.
He added, “This is not a money-making scheme for the council. The council has been losing money on the market and has been working hard to adapt the operating model so that it breaks even. That is our goal.”
At the committee meeting on 2 September, the planning permission was granted with a vote of seven to one. Council cabinet member Manda Rigby remarked, “Bath Christmas Market is a much-loved tradition that brings people together, supports local businesses and contributes tens of millions of pounds to our local economy.
“This decision secures the future of this hugely popular, internationally recognised event and ensures it can continue to evolve responsibly and sustainably in the years ahead - which we’ll continue to do in consultation with residents, businesses and stakeholders.”
Looking ahead, the Bath Christmas Market is scheduled to open for 2026 on 26 November and run for 18 days until 13 December. The council has assured the public that the essential roadworks currently closing Manvers Street will be completed before the event begins.
