Bath is gearing up for one of the most anticipated festive events of the year: the Bath Christmas Market. Opening its doors to residents on Wednesday, November 26, and welcoming the wider public from Thursday, November 27, the market will feature over 250 stalls bursting with unique gifts, festive foods, and handcrafted treasures.
Celebrated internationally, the market is more than just a festive gathering—it’s a significant economic driver for the region. In 2024 alone, approximately 444,000 visitors are expected to descend on Bath, generating an impressive £60.4 million in revenue for local businesses. This thriving event supports over 500 jobs, underscoring its vital role in the local economy and community.
John Rennie of Silkwood Traders reflects fondly on his long-standing participation. “We nervously joined the third market in 2003 with little idea of what to expect. After nearly selling out, it was the turning point for us. The market is incredibly special, and we’re privileged to be part of it for the last 22 years. This year, you’ll find us in a new spot on Milsom Street—see you there!”

The vision behind the market was born from a need to revitalize Bath’s economy during a tough period. Former councillors Marian McNeir MBE and Gitte Dawson spearheaded the initiative after foot-and-mouth disease devastated local businesses. “We wanted something to attract visitors in November, not just summer,” Marian recalls. “The essence of our vision endures, and it’s rewarding to see Bath’s market become a model for other cities.”
Original stallholder Rachel Charlton of Cherry Tree Preserves emphasizes the market’s impact on businesses and the city’s festive atmosphere. “Bath has supported our growth over the years. Each year, new and loyal customers find us here. The market brings an enchanting atmosphere that truly signals the start of Christmas.”
Councillor Manda Rigby, Cabinet Member for Communications and Community, highlighted the event’s enduring appeal: “Bath Christmas Market is a beloved tradition, bringing joy and celebrating our city’s rich creativity and heritage. As we mark 25 years, we honor the traders and community who have made this success possible.”
Local entrepreneur Alex Peters, involved with Bath Christmas Market since the early 2000s, echoes the sentiment. “The market has been instrumental in growing our businesses, allowing us to create sustainable jobs. Beyond the market’s 18 days, it positions Bath as a globally recognized destination year-round, contributing over £60 million to the regional economy.”
This year’s Bath Christmas Market opens for the public from Thursday, November 27, through Sunday, December 14. Bath residents can enjoy a special preview evening on Wednesday, November 26, from 5 pm to 7 pm. Those holding a Discovery Card are eligible for discounts at all chalets Monday through Friday, enhancing the festive cheer for the local community.
