Bath Abbey Seeks £90k to Complete Stained Glass Tribute for Local Saint

Bath Abbey is launching a fundraising appeal to raise £90,000 to complete a striking stained glass window honoring Saint Alphege, an important figure born in Bath. So far, the campaign has secured 40 percent of the funds needed, bolstered by early donations including support from The Friends of Bath Abbey.

Renowned stained glass artist Neil Ireson, based in Bath, has designed the window to commemorate Saint Alphege—born in 953—who served as Abbot of Bath Abbey in the early 980s before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury in 1006. Known for his messages of peace and generosity, Alphege is a celebrated Christian martyr with deep local roots.

Once fully funded, the stained glass will be installed in 2026 within Bath Abbey’s Saint Alphege Chapel, a tranquil space frequently visited by international pilgrims for private reflection. The window’s design integrates symbolic elements including Bath’s dual waters—the River Avon and the Roman hot springs—alongside the Christian “Fountain of Life.” A border cleverly evokes international flags, reflecting the Abbey’s identity as “A House of Prayer for All Nations.”

Reverend Canon Guy Bridgewater, rector of Bath Abbey, expressed hope that the window will inspire and uplift visitors. “This vivid new depiction of our local saint will encourage prayer and gratitude,” he said. “The themes of holiness, the Fountain of Life, and global mission reinforce our call to be a house of prayer for all nations. It is a beautiful work of art that speaks ancient truths in a contemporary language.”

Artist Neil Ireson shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “This commission to create a contemporary stained glass window in honor of Saint Alphege is a milestone in my career. Bath Abbey holds personal significance for me, making this project particularly meaningful.”

Supporters can contribute online at www.bathabbey.org/alphege-appeal, participate in the Abbey’s Shoppers Carols throughout November and December—where half of the retiring collection supports the appeal—or attend the Jethro Tull concert on December 18, with all profits going to the campaign.

Donors will receive messages of thanks, regular project updates, and invitations to special Abbey events. Applications are also underway to trusts and foundations to help reach the funding goal.
