Bank Holiday Raft Race Returns to Bishop’s Palace Moat

Get your paddles ready – the beloved Bank Holiday raft race is back! This exciting annual event, held on the moat of the Bishop’s Palace, has delighted spectators and participants alike since its inception in 1963.

The history of the race dates back to an idea sparked by Simon and Peter Wright, sons of the vicar of St Thomas’ Church in Wells, and Bishop ‘Jock’ Henderson. The Wright brothers were part of the St Thomas Youth Fellowship, a vibrant community group founded by Arthur Rice to encourage young people to engage in friendly activities and serve the local community. The fellowship embraced the concept of racing boats on the moat, and the first event was held on the Spring Bank Holiday in 1963.

Now, 62 years later, the tradition continues strong with the support of Bishop Michael, the Bishop’s Palace Trust, and local Wells businesses who sponsor the event. The raft race kicks off at 11:30 am on Bank Holiday Monday, promising an afternoon filled with spirited competition, community spirit, and lots of watery fun.

As Ratty wisely noted in Kenneth Grahame’s classic, The Wind in the Willows: “Believe me my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” Join in the fun and cheer on your favorite team—see you at the moat!
