Balconies at Bridgwater Flats Set for Replacement to Enhance Safety

Residents of Saltlands House, a three-block apartment complex in Bridgwater, Somerset, could soon benefit from safer and more durable balconies. Managed by Homes in Somerset, Saltlands House includes 42 flats constructed between 1967 and 1975, each featuring glass and timber balconies now deemed “dilapidated,” “in poor condition,” and “in need of repair.”

In response to safety concerns, the housing association, which oversees approximately 4,000 homes for Somerset Council, has submitted plans to replace all 36 balconies across the three blocks. The upgrade aims to significantly reduce the risk of falls onto the communal green space below.

The current balconies' glazing and timber handrails will be removed following feedback from residents worried about safety. They will be replaced with new black steel panels and handrails, raised to a height of 1.1 metres to better prevent accidents.

A Homes in Somerset spokesperson explained, “These proposed works will improve the condition, safety, and visual appeal of the buildings while extending the lifespan of the balconies. Given Bridgwater’s growth and the Sedgemoor Local Plan, the updated balconies will enhance resident safety and encourage increased use of outdoor spaces.”

Somerset Council is expected to decide on the application by late autumn. If approved promptly, Homes in Somerset has yet to announce a timeline for when the balcony replacements will begin.
