Bailiffs Board Up Disused Papa Johns in Glastonbury Following Anti-Social Behaviour

Bailiffs have sealed off a disused Papa Johns building in Market Place, Glastonbury, after it was occupied by squatters and linked to persistent anti-social behaviour. Avon and Somerset Police reported that the premises became a hotspot for disturbances, including noise complaints, public disorder, and intimidation of local residents and businesses.

Earlier in October, the police highlighted their commitment to working with partner agencies—such as the local council and housing services—to tackle the ongoing issues. They increased patrols in the area, engaged with those involved, and explored legal measures to resolve the illegal occupation.

On Thursday, October 30, the building was boarded up by bailiffs acting on behalf of the landlord, following the successful acquisition of a court order. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police stated: “Anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Glastonbury town centre remains a priority for neighbourhood officers, who conduct targeted uniformed patrols to deter incidents and identify offenders.

Officers continue to collaborate with various partners to address concerns including drunkenness, disorder, and drug use. Since late September, the vacant premises attracted squatters, which intensified ASB in the area. The court order enabled the landlord to regain control, leading to the building being secured.

Addressing ASB involves escalating actions ranging from formal warnings to court orders. Detailed reports from the community, including descriptions of those involved, are essential for building evidence to support these legal actions and enforce compliance. Violating a Criminal Behaviour Order is a criminal offence that can result in arrest and imprisonment.”
