Backwell’s Unique ‘Strawberries and Cream’ Tree Faces Challenges

In the village of Backwell, North Somerset, a rare and captivating tree known for its distinctive ‘strawberries and cream’ blossoms—pink on one side and white on the other—is showing signs of distress. This hybrid tree is one of only two in the country that bloom with such striking dual colors each spring.

Although it is currently out of season for blossoms, local residents have noticed the tree appears “very sad,” raising concerns about its health. North Somerset Council’s tree officer has confirmed the tree is indeed “struggling,” likely due to an extended spell of dry weather impacting many trees across the district.

To aid the tree’s recovery, plans are underway to apply a layer of bark mulch around its base. This mulch will help retain moisture in the soil and gradually enrich it with nutrients as it breaks down. Additionally, limited remedial pruning will be carried out, including a moderate crown lift over the nearby highway and removal of dead wood. The timing of this work is ideal to maximize the tree’s chances of recovery.

Located on Rodney Road, the tree is a cherished village landmark currently protected by metal fencing to shield it from nearby construction traffic related to the Rodney Road development. This fencing has also become a rallying point for residents opposing the large housing project expanding the village, which currently comprises about 2,000 homes with permission granted for approximately 800 more.

The community’s efforts, along with expert care, aim to preserve this beloved natural treasure for future generations to enjoy.
