Backwell School, located in North Somerset, has received high praise from Ofsted for its commitment to maintaining strong academic standards and creating a calm and supportive atmosphere for its students. The recent inspection commended the school’s high expectations for student behavior, its ambitious curriculum, and the dedication of its teaching staff. With 1,630 pupils, including 276 in the sixth form, the school has been recognized for its efforts to promote reading, improve attendance, and provide comprehensive support for students considering further education or careers.
The report also highlighted the school’s wider curriculum, which includes important topics such as healthy relationships, consent, and local area-specific knowledge to ensure students' safety. Additionally, the provision of clubs, trips, and visits was noted as a way to support the personal development of the pupils.
While the inspection praised the school for its effective safeguarding arrangements and the reduction of staff workload to support their well-being, it also raised concerns about the support provided to pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and other barriers to learning. The report urged the school to better consider the needs of these students when adapting the curriculum and ensure that they receive the extra help they require in lessons.

Despite the commendations, Ofsted issued two key recommendations for improvement: the need for comprehensive checks on students' understanding to address misconceptions, and consistent support for pupils with specific needs.
Overall, the report concluded that Backwell School provides a safe and positive learning environment but highlighted the importance of ensuring that all students, including those with additional needs, receive the necessary support to reach their full potential.
