The community in Backwell has come together to support their district councillor, Bridget Petty, after the parish council called on her to resign due to her taking a lengthy leave of absence to focus on her mental health.
Petty, who has been a vocal member of the North Somerset Council since 2019, recently experienced the loss of both her parents within a short time frame. Following this, she announced plans to take a five-month sabbatical to spend time with her family traveling in Europe. While the North Somerset’s constitution allows for a leave of absence up to six months, the Backwell Parish Council urged Petty to step down. This stance prompted 47 locals to sign a letter of support for the councillor.
The drafted letter, organized by Rick Evans, emphasized the importance of recognizing mental health as a critical component of overall well-being. It expressed dismay over the pressure placed on Petty and criticized the manner in which the parish council delivered its response. The letter called for the community to stand by their councillor with compassion and support during this challenging time.

In response, Petty expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of local support, stating, “It hasn’t been an easy decision but I do believe that I do need to look after my mental health and I want to be able to return and do a good job for my community. And that’s what matters.” She also noted that the neighboring Green councillors have agreed to be available for Backwell locals for any local issues during her absence.
The parish council expressed their respect for Petty’s decision to prioritize well-being and family, stating, “As parish councillors, we need to focus on what is best for the village.” They also suggested that a by-election would ensure continued representation for Backwell at the council table, providing both continuity for the village and allowing Petty the flexibility for an extended break if desired until the next elections.
Throughout the ordeal, Petty remains committed to returning to her duties and contributing positively to her community upon her return.
