Baby Formula Recalled Over Toxin Concerns: Parents Urged Not to Use

Parents across the UK are being urgently advised to check their supplies of baby formula following a safety recall of a batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula by Danone. The recall is prompted by concerns that the product may contain cereulide, a harmful toxin produced by the Bacillus cereus bacteria, known to cause rapid onset of vomiting and stomach cramps.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed that the recall applies to a single batch sold in the UK—batch number 31-10-2026 with a best-before date of October 31, 2026. While additional batches in other countries have also been affected, the UK recall focuses on this specific batch only.

Darren Whitby, head of incidents and resilience at the FSA, emphasized the importance of parental vigilance: “If you have purchased this batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula, do not feed it to infants or young children. If there are any health concerns after use, please seek advice from your GP or contact NHS 111.”

Retailer Boots has also issued an alert, advising customers that the affected batch was sold between May and July 2025 and is eligible for a full refund—even without a receipt.

This recall follows a similar withdrawal by Nestlé of several SMA infant formula products after they too were found to potentially contain cereulide toxin. Nestlé’s recall affects multiple SMA formulas, including SMA Advanced First Infant Milk and SMA Anti Reflux, among others, all linked to a quality issue with an ingredient sourced from a major supplier.

Jane Rawling, head of incidents at the FSA, reiterated the warning: “Parents, guardians, and caregivers should refrain from feeding infants with these recalled products. We are working swiftly to remove affected items from the market to protect children’s health.”

So far, no illnesses have been directly linked to the recalled products. Both Danone and Nestlé are cooperating with health authorities to ensure the safety of infant nutrition products and to provide reassurance to concerned families.
