Award-winning Bath bakery Sugarcane Studio to pause operations until 2027 for family reasons

Sugarcane Studio, a beloved Taiwanese bakery in Bath, has announced it will be closing its doors for the foreseeable future as the owners prepare to welcome a new addition to their family. The bakery will remain open until Saturday, 15 August, after which it will temporarily cease operations.

Founded in 2018 by Neil Edwards and Fang-Yu Lin, Sugarcane Studio established its physical presence on Grove Street in 2020. Since then, it has earned a reputation for its diverse selection of sweet treats, including earl grey and lemon chiffon cakes as well as matcha and azuki bean gateaux.

In a heartfelt statement, Neil and Fang shared the joyful news of expecting a baby early in October: “There has been a little bun in the oven for a while now, and we’re so excited to welcome our newest family member.” They also revealed plans to relocate: “Our current lease is ending, and with rising costs and space limitations, we have decided to make a difficult but positive change. We are in the process of securing a larger location and aim to reopen in 2027. We believe this move will enable us to craft something even more special in the future.”

The couple invited supporters to visit the current bakery for a final time before the temporary closure, encouraging them to drop by for coffee, cake, a chat, or simply to say farewell. “This isn’t the ending we imagined, but it feels like the beginning of something even more exciting,” they added. “Thank you for believing in us and supporting our independent business. We’ll see you again in 2027.”

Sugarcane Studio has also been known for creating wedding cakes and facilitating workshops. The bakery has earned national recognition, having won six Great Taste Awards and three Great British Food awards.

Customers wishing to place cake orders should do so by Friday, 7 August. The bakery will remain open until 15 August before closing until its anticipated reopening in 2027.
