Avebury Manor Reopens for Christmas After Flood Restoration

After nearly two years of closure caused by severe flooding, Avebury Manor, a Grade I-listed 16th-century property in Wiltshire, is reopening its doors for the Christmas season. Managed by the National Trust, the manor will welcome visitors starting Saturday, November 29, 2024, showcasing a festive spirit through the house and gardens.

The flooding in January 2024 caused significant damage, particularly on the ground floor where floodwaters reached over one meter in some garden areas. Restoration has been underway since, involving specialist contractors and ongoing off-site conservation work on many furnishings.

This Christmas opening promises a heartfelt celebration with handmade decorations crafted by dedicated volunteers, illuminated trees, seasonal music, and a warm holiday atmosphere throughout the house. Amelia Bryan, the house manager, shared, “The flood was a huge shock to everyone, but we’re so excited to welcome visitors back. Seeing families and friends enjoy the festive displays at Avebury Manor is a cherished tradition.”

Beyond the manor itself, the festivities extend outdoors. Families can enjoy a special story time with St Nicholas held in the manor’s historic 16th-century dovecote, where children will also receive small gifts. Additionally, a magical garden trail invites visitors to find eight hidden hares and solve a word puzzle.

On December 6 and 7, the threshing barn will host two Christmas markets featuring seasonal stalls, live music, and carol singing — perfect for holiday shopping and enjoyment.

‘Christmas at Avebury Manor’ will run daily from 11 am to 4 pm through Sunday, January 4, 2025. After this joyful season, the manor will temporarily close again to complete final restoration work, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
