Arthur Green made a strong statement when he entered the match off the bench at Kingsholm on Friday night. Despite Bath Rugby’s youthful side narrowly losing 19-17 to West Country rivals Gloucester in the PREM Rugby Cup, Green’s energetic and powerful cameo was a standout positive.
With Bath’s primary number eights, Alfie Barbeary and Jaco Coetzee, sidelined due to injury, the number eight spot remains open ahead of a critical stretch in the season. While Miles Reid is the likely frontrunner, 21-year-old Green is making a compelling case for selection.
Bath academy pathway coach Ryan Davis praised Green’s performance: “He made a massive impact. His footwork, collision work, and energy brought momentum to the team. I probably could have brought him on earlier, but his impact was clear.”

Davis added, “Arthur just wants to keep playing and getting on the pitch, which bodes well for selection as the PREM continues.”
Green’s inclusion came late, following his return from training with England A. He has already represented England U20s this season. Davis emphasized the significance of this international exposure for Bath’s emerging talents. “It’s great for him to be considered at that level. You can see he’s thrilled with the experience.”
Other Bath players recently involved with England A include Kepu Tuipulotu, Vilikesa Sela, and Ewan Richards, reflecting the club’s commitment to developing young stars through international exposure.
Despite tries from Austin Emens, Ethan Staddon, and Tyler Offiah, Bath sits third in Pool A with five points after three games. Gloucester’s points were sealed through effective kicking by George Barton, contributing to the narrow victory.
Looking forward, Bath faces Sale Sharks next weekend, a critical matchup in their pursuit of the knockout stages. Davis commented, “If we can start the next block with a win, the final four games will be decisive. I’m disappointed we lost tonight—there were opportunities to gain more points—but there’s plenty more rugby to play.”
Regarding squad rotation for the intense 12-week period ahead, Davis noted, “We need a balanced side to manage rest and give players opportunities, ensuring they gain valuable experience.”
