The Weston-super-Mare community is mourning the tragic death of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe, a pupil at Becket Primary School. Aria died on the evening of Monday, December 15, after suffering a single stab wound.
Emergency services were called to Lime Close shortly after 6 pm, with forensic investigations commencing that same night. A 15-year-old boy has since been charged with Aria’s murder. Due to legal protections, the teenager’s name cannot be disclosed. He appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, December 17, and is scheduled to appear next at Bristol Crown Court on Friday, December 19.
The community has expressed overwhelming grief and sympathy. Tributes have poured in, including heartfelt messages left alongside flowers, teddy bears, and cards at the police cordon. One friend wrote, “Aria, thank you for playing with me,” while three pupils from Aria’s school shared: “RIP little lady. Taken well too soon. Fly high. Thinking of you and your family at this sad time.”

Simon Marriott, chief executive of the Kaleidoscope Multi-Academy Trust, which oversees Becket Primary School, issued a statement saying: “Our school and trust community are devastated and upset by the tragic loss of Aria Thorpe. We are working closely with professional agencies to provide support to children, staff, and families as they process this loss. Our thoughts remain with Aria’s family at this very difficult time.”
Local leaders have also spoken out. Weston-super-Mare MP Daniel Aldridge described Aria’s death as “an utterly heartbreaking tragedy,” sending condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew her. North Somerset Councillor Catherine Gibbons called the event “a devastating tragedy,” emphasizing the community’s shock and sorrow.
Avon and Somerset Police Superintendent Jen Appleford highlighted the profound impact of Aria’s loss. She reassured the public that the police are collaborating with partner agencies and schools to support those affected. She also requested privacy for Aria’s family during this distressing period and thanked local residents for their patience during ongoing investigations.
The community continues to come together in solidarity, supporting one another as they grapple with the loss of the young girl whose life was taken far too soon.
