Approval for 200 New Homes on Yeovil’s Edge

Local councillors have recently given the green light for the construction of nearly 200 new homes on the western edge of Yeovil. The Bunford Park commercial site, which received initial approval in 2011, will finally be transformed into a residential area giving rise to numerous job opportunities. The development is anticipated to kick off within the next year.

The delivered residential units, spearheaded by Abbey Manor Developments, will be situated to the south of the business park, with access via Watercombe Lane. Somerset Council’s planning committee has granted approval for the construction of 185 homes across two separate applications. This favorable decision paves the way for potential commencement of construction within the coming year.

The new residential zones will provide improved pedestrian links, with plans for 100 homes nearest to the main road, and an additional 85 houses to be developed at a later stage. Although only 15% of the homes will be affordable, these developments will contribute substantial funds for essential community amenities and services, including early years places, NHS services, play equipment, changing rooms, playing pitches, and youth facilities.

Concerns were raised regarding traffic levels in the area. However, assurances were given that the development will integrate with existing infrastructure and anticipate changes in traffic patterns post-covid. The site’s location within the Somerset Levels and Moors catchment requires mitigation measures to counteract any potential environmental impact.

The plans were met with a 12-0 vote in favor of approval by the committee, with one abstention. In addition to the residential development, the Abbey Manor Group is also proposing a new leisure center within the Bunford Park site, offering a range of recreational facilities.
