This summer, animal lovers and families have a fantastic reason to visit Ferne Animal Sanctuary. Located on a sprawling 72-acre site near Chard, Somerset, the sanctuary is hosting a vibrant “Summer of Fun” program packed with engaging, family-friendly activities.
Throughout the school holidays, visitors can enjoy a dynamic mix of animal encounters, storytelling sessions, creative crafts, and nature-focused adventures. Among the highlights are two special “Willows & Words” events featuring acclaimed children’s authors Emma Carroll and Claire Barker. On Thursday, August 7, Emma Carroll will lead a reading and writing workshop inspired by her latest book, The Houdini Inheritance, followed by a book signing. Later, on Thursday, August 21, Claire Barker will captivate young audiences aged six to ten with storytelling sessions and a Q&A based on her new release, Hettie Nettle.
Families won’t want to miss the sanctuary’s Open Day on Saturday, August 23, with free entry from 10 am to 4 pm. Guests can explore the beautiful grounds, engage in crafts at the Creative Corner, browse a pop-up charity shop, and discover more about animal welfare through interactive displays and themed trails. Visitors will also enjoy a 20% discount on bookings for The Hub, the venue’s new event space, available exclusively during the Open Day.
