A disabled man from Taunton is set to challenge Somerset Council in the High Court over changes to its council tax reduction scheme, which he claims are discriminatory and irrational.
The council amended its scheme in February 2025 to unify the level of support across Somerset and address financial constraints. However, research by Citizens Advice Somerset found that over 4,000 people on universal credit, specifically those receiving the limited capability for work-related activity (LCWRA) element, are now facing higher council tax bills.
