American Musician’s UK Busking Challenge in Bath Leaves Him with Just a Fiver

Blake Robert, an American musician known as @theblakerobert on social media, has taken on a daring challenge: he arrived in the UK with no money and vowed not to return to the US until he earns his way back. Armed only with a guitar and a suitcase, Blake began busking on the streets of Bath, hoping to sustain himself and save enough for his flight home.

Documenting his journey on TikTok, Blake shared an update on his third day of performing. After attending an open-mic night, he connected with local street performers who organize daily meets to fairly allocate busking spots. With their guidance, Blake secured three prime locations throughout Bath’s city centre to play his music.

Starting outside the iconic Bath Abbey, Blake earned £24 along with a surprise gift of green grapes from a passerby. However, a sudden rain shower at his next spot, the Abbey Churchyard, cut his earnings to just £1 as crowds scattered for cover. Undeterred, he moved to Stall Street, where he attracted a small crowd and made £18, receiving compliments and even sparking a bit of dance among listeners.

Despite the challenges, Blake kept his spirits high. However, after spending £15.25 on a steak and ale pie and £22 on a hotel room, his net profit by day’s end was just £5.75—not including a $5 tip he received. The feedback on his videos has been encouraging, with viewers praising his boldness and expressing interest in his journey, while others offered money-saving advice and travel tips for exploring other nearby cities like Bristol.

Blake’s adventure continues to capture attention as he strives to turn his musical talent into a means of survival and return ticket, sharing the highs and lows of street performing in one of England’s most picturesque cities.
