Ambitious Plans Unveiled for Taunton’s Staplegrove Urban Extension Featuring 915 New Homes

Taunton residents are being given a valuable opportunity to review and share feedback on updated plans for a major development project that will add 915 new homes to the growing town. The revised proposals for the Staplegrove East urban extension will be presented at a public drop-in event scheduled for April 30.

The Staplegrove expansion is situated at the north-western edge of Taunton, nestled between the A358 Staplegrove Road and Taunton Road. Ultimately, this ambitious development will provide a total of 1,628 homes, alongside commercial spaces and a new primary school to serve the community.

Currently, construction is underway on a new junction along Staplegrove Road. This infrastructure work will enable access to the Staplegrove West site, also known as Quantock Park, which is being developed by Bloor Homes South West. Plans for the first 242 homes in this area received approval from Somerset Council in late February, marking significant progress for the project.

In parallel, Stonewater is inviting residents to learn about and contribute their views on the revised plans for the adjacent Staplegrove East site. The site stretches from Whitmore Lane to Taunton Road and includes a new roundabout designed to connect Taunton Road with the spine road linking to Quantock Park.

Although outline planning permission was granted back in 2017, progress on the Staplegrove East site was delayed, as developers and planning authorities addressed complex issues such as viability and nutrient neutrality requirements. Recent approval by the council’s planning committee west in March 2025 for the creation of new wetlands south of Corkscrew Lane will help mitigate environmental impacts associated with the new housing.

Stonewater’s amended proposals reflect updated technical assessments, evolving conditions, and community feedback collected over time. Key elements include redesigned plans for the new primary school, enhanced public open spaces, and a local centre that may encompass shops and other facilities.

Charlotte Buggins, Stonewater’s head of development for the South, expressed enthusiasm about engaging with local residents: “With the first phase of Staplegrove West underway, the community is already witnessing transformation in the area. We want to offer a clear update on the plans and listen to people’s thoughts on the proposals for new homes, community amenities, and supporting infrastructure.”

The drop-in event will take place at Taunton Vale Sports Club on Gipsy Lane on Thursday, April 30, from 2pm to 7:30pm. For those unable to attend in person, participation can be made online at www.staplegrove-east.co.uk or by calling 0800 689 5209.

Staplegrove is one of three major urban extensions planned to accommodate the bulk of Taunton’s housing growth over the next decade. Progress is also being made at Orchard Grove (the Comeytrowe extension), expected to provide 2,000 homes with related facilities including a primary school and park-and-ride. Additionally, plans for phase two of the Monkton Heathfield extension—featuring 1,450 homes and various amenities—await committee approval later this year.

These combined developments represent a significant step toward meeting Taunton’s future housing and community needs, promising vibrant new neighborhoods integrated with essential infrastructure.
