Ambitious Hydroelectric Project Planned for Pulteney Weir in Bath

Bath’s historic Pulteney Weir is set to undergo a transformation that could see it generating electricity for the city. Bath and North East Somerset Council is looking into the feasibility of replacing the radial sluice gate with a small hydroelectric scheme. This change aims to generate power for several key council buildings, including the leisure center and its heated pool.

Council leader Kevin Guy expressed enthusiasm about the potential project, highlighting its significance in their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. This initiative is a part of the larger goal to generate 12MW of renewable energy by 2030, vital for offsetting the energy consumption of council buildings and vehicles. The proposal aligns with Bath’s approach to utilizing its landmarks for sustainable energy generation, such as the heat exchange blades in the Roman Baths, tapping into the city’s natural hot springs.

The council’s investment in renewable energy also encompasses rooftop solar projects and electric vehicles, reflecting a proactive approach to sustainability. Despite financial challenges, the council views self-generated power as a means to reduce energy costs and make progress towards their environmental objectives.

The budget approval, albeit amidst financial strains, demonstrates the commitment to prioritizing sustainability, social care, and community initiatives. While the proposed budget drew criticism for lacking bold action, the council remains dedicated to pursuing initiatives aligned with their 2030 manifesto, including “clean and green” funding and road safety improvements.

This endeavor marks a significant step in harnessing the potential of Pulteney Weir for renewable energy, building upon previous considerations for a hydroelectric scheme back in 2013.
