The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for heavy rain ahead of the arrival of Storm Chandra, expected to impact the region this afternoon, Monday 26 January. This follows a yellow warning announced just yesterday.
Storm Chandra is expected to bring significant rainfall, flooding, and disruption across parts of the south west, including Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall. The amber warning will be in effect from 5pm today until 9am tomorrow morning, Tuesday 27 January, while a yellow warning spans the entire south west from 1pm today until 10am tomorrow.
Areas such as Taunton, Chard, and Yeovil in Somerset face heightened risks of flooding, train cancellations, and hazardous driving conditions. With the ground already saturated from previous rainfall and strong winds brought by Storm Ingrid, the additional rainfall from Chandra increases the likelihood of road closures, stranded communities, and potential landslides in vulnerable locations.

Rainfall is forecast to range between 30-50mm within the amber warning zones, with 60-80mm expected on higher ground, particularly around south Dartmoor. Strong southeasterly winds will accompany the heavy rain and may add to the disruption.
The Met Office cautions residents to prepare for significant flooding and advises that travel by road should be avoided if possible. “It is not safe to drive, walk or swim through floodwater,” they warn. Commuters and local residents should exercise extreme caution, avoid flooded areas, and call emergency services if trapped in fast-flowing or deep water.
To stay safe, the Met Office recommends preparing an emergency flood kit stocked with essentials such as torches, spare batteries, waterproof clothing, and a first aid kit.
As Storm Chandra moves through, timely preparation and vigilance will be key to minimizing risk and managing the severe weather impact.
