Alfie Ogborne Eager to Shine After Reflecting on Disappointing Season

Somerset’s young left-arm bowler Alfie Ogborne is ready to accelerate his cricketing career after a season he describes as disappointing. At just 22, Ogborne is determined to make a significant impact and become a regular feature in Somerset’s playing eleven across all formats this year.

Having been a steady presence in the Metro Bank 50 Over Cup over the past three seasons, Alfie’s first-class appearances have been limited to only five games, two of which were during a loan spell with Kent. He’s yet to debut in the T20 format but sees the upcoming season as a fresh opportunity. With several bowlers departing Somerset during the winter, including Josh Davey, Kasey Aldridge, and Ben Green, and the overseas player Matt Henry not returning, the door has opened for Ogborne to secure more game time.

“My main goal this season is to be a consistent part of the first team,” Ogborne shared. “I want to establish myself in red-ball cricket and be a key part of the bowling rotation, something I nearly achieved last year. Leading the attack in the 50-over competition remains a priority, and I’m hopeful for a chance to debut in T20 cricket.”

Ogborne has invested significant effort in refining his skills during the off-season. Collaborating closely with coaches Steve Kirby and Jason Kerr, he has worked on adjusting his bowling action after overcoming a back injury. He’s also benefited from personalized fitness and physiotherapy sessions with Laura Holmes and strength and conditioning coach Joseph Satt, gaining valuable insight into his physical strengths and areas for improvement.

Reflecting on last season, Ogborne said, “I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I didn’t put in enough work off the pitch. When I did get chances, like against Hampshire, I didn’t perform as well as I could have, and I found myself struggling afterward. However, the Metro Bank One Day Cup was a bright spot—I took wickets and made the impact I aimed for.”

Looking ahead to 2024, he is optimistic. “I’ve made key changes to my action that should boost my longevity and enhance my skills. I feel stronger, my pace is improving, and I’m ready to get back in the thick of competition. Bowling is where I thrive—when things get tough, that’s when I want the ball in my hands.”

Ogborne recognizes the opportunities created by the current team changes. “If a senior player gets injured, I want to be the first to step in. And if I’m already playing, I’m eager to play every match possible.”

Coach Steve Kirby praises Alfie’s dedication and sees a bright future ahead. “He has worked hard to tidy up his action, which puts him in a much better position for consistency and durability. Losing several bowlers this winter presents a fantastic opportunity for Alfie to step up. He’s fitter, stronger, and has the fire and determination that professional cricket demands. I truly believe he is on the path to a successful career.”
