Aldi Targets Somerset for Major Expansion, Including New Stores in Bath

Aldi has announced that Somerset is a key focus area in its ambitious £1.6 billion expansion plan spanning 2026 and 2027. The UK’s fourth-largest supermarket operator revealed this during its annual trading update, outlining the intention to open 80 new stores across the country within the next two years.

This substantial investment will not only fund new store developments but also upgrades to existing locations and improvements to distribution centres to support growing demand for affordable groceries. Specifically, Aldi plans to invest approximately £17 million in Somerset, targeting new store sites in cities including Bath.

Currently operating 1,060 stores across the UK, Aldi aims to increase its footprint to 1,500 locations. The expansion is expected to generate thousands of new jobs and enhance opportunities for British suppliers.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, commented, “Consumers continue to face financial pressures, so we remain committed to what Aldi excels at—providing customers with high-quality products at unbeatable prices. We offer everyday low prices without gimmicks or clubs, just prices customers can rely on and quality they trust.

“From our first store opening over 35 years ago, we have brought affordable groceries to nearly 800 towns and cities, yet many communities still lack access to Aldi. Our record £1.6 billion investment over the next two years is aimed at bringing Aldi’s affordable prices closer to millions more customers.”
