Aldi Supermarkets in Somerset to Undergo Major Makeovers Amid £650m Expansion

Aldi is rolling out an extensive refurbishment and expansion plan across its South West branches this summer, investing a substantial £650 million into upgrading and growing its UK presence. Key Somerset stores in Clevedon and Glastonbury will receive comprehensive makeovers as part of this effort, designed to enhance the customer experience and modernize store layouts.

Over the next 14 weeks, Aldi plans to open ten brand-new locations nationwide, while 30 existing shops, including those in Somerset, will be refreshed with new features and improved designs. Looking ahead to 2025, the supermarket aims to open an additional 40 stores, cementing its position as a leading supermarket chain.

The initial phase of the refurbishment focused on expanding space for fresh produce, chilled items, and food-to-go options. It also introduced streamlined store layouts, upgraded fixtures, and more energy-efficient LED lighting. The current phase will bring further enhancements such as redesigned Bakery and Health & Beauty departments alongside CO2 refrigeration upgrades to support sustainability goals.

Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, commented: “Our mission at Aldi is to provide everyone with access to high-quality food at unbeatable prices. Through our ambitious store openings and refreshes, we aim to improve customer experience continually, allowing us to deliver the best value to shoppers across the country.”

Each new store opening is expected to create 40 new jobs locally, supporting communities economically. Aldi also highlights its position as the best-paying supermarket chain in Britain, with hourly wages rising to at least £12.75, and £14.05 within the M25 area—both above the National Living Wage. Additionally, Aldi is the only supermarket to offer all colleagues paid breaks, a benefit worth approximately £1,370 annually for the average store employee.

These investments underscore Aldi’s commitment to expanding access to quality food while prioritizing customer experience and employee welfare.
