Alarming figures reveal the extensive presence of speeding motorists caught across Somerset in the past year. BristolLive obtained the data via a Freedom of Information request, unveiling the motorway speed cameras responsible for the highest number of tickets issued.
Notably, the Avon and Somerset Police area recorded a staggering speed of 137mph as the highest, with nearly 14,000 drivers caught on a stretch of the M4. The M4’s eastbound carriageway between Junction 20 and 19 topped the list, detecting 13,812 speeding drivers in 2024.
Additional high-activity areas included sections of the M5 between Junction 16 and 17, where over 10,000 drivers were caught, and the A303 Ilminster bypass, where nearly 3,000 drivers were reported for speeding (BristolLive).

The top speed cameras in the Avon and Somerset Police force area for catching drivers exceeding the limit were as follows:
- M4 J20-J19 = 13,812
- M32 = 11,481
- M5 J16-J17 = 6,371
- M5 J17-J16 = 4,243
- B3122 St John’s Lane = 4,211
- M4 J19-J20 = 3,598
- A303 Ilminster bypass = 2,685
- M5 J26-J27 = 2,452
- Lansdown Ln = 2,308
- M5 J16-J15 = 2,007
Furthermore, the data highlighted that South Gloucestershire documented the highest number of speeding drivers in the region over the 12-month period (44,131), followed by Bristol (28,363) and North Somerset (8,895).
