The cycling segment of the Langport Triathlon was abruptly cancelled today following a serious incident on the race route. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were dispatched to the scene, necessitating the immediate suspension of the event.
Race Nation, the organisers of the 31st Great Langport Triathlon, announced on their Facebook page that the decision came after a member of the public was involved in a critical situation on the bike course. The road was cleared of spectators and athletes to allow the air ambulance to land safely and emergency personnel to access the area without obstruction.
A spokesperson for Race Nation explained, “Due to a serious incident involving a member of the public on the bike route, emergency services required full and unrestricted access to the road. For the safety and welfare of the community, we had no choice but to halt the remaining cycling leg immediately.”

Many competitors had already passed through the affected section before the closure. The organisers are now working closely with their timing team to review data and determine final results, including times for those who could not complete the cycling portion. They acknowledge this process will take time and request patience from participants and supporters.
Importantly, Race Nation emphasised that the incident was unrelated to any participants, volunteers, or race officials. “We want to reassure everyone, especially those who know someone taking part, that the incident was completely separate from the event,” they stated.
The organisers extended their thoughts to those impacted by the incident and expressed gratitude to all athletes, volunteers, and supporters for their understanding and cooperation under these exceptional circumstances.
