Agricultural Machinery Firm SFM Technology Enters Administration

SFM Technology, a Somerset-based agricultural machinery company, has entered administration, marking a challenging chapter in its long history. Founded in Martock in 1985, the firm originally specialised in fruit harvesting equipment before expanding its capabilities during the late 1990s into aerospace and automotive sectors.

In 2012, SFM Technology earned a prestigious Royal Warrant, an official endorsement allowing the company to display the Royal Arms as a mark of excellence and supply goods or services to the royal household.

Today, SFM Technology offers a wide range of services including design, research and development, manufacturing, 3D printing, and powder coating. Its client list includes notable organisations such as the Ministry of Defence and Orchard Pig Cider.

On May 15, 2024, joint administrators Andy John and Miles Needham of FRP Advisory were appointed to oversee the firm’s operations following a winding-up petition initiated by HMRC in October 2023. Recent Companies House records reveal that compulsory strike-off proceedings were temporarily suspended in March 2024, and the business currently faces an ‘active proposal to strike off.’ Moreover, the company’s latest financial accounts remain outstanding.

Richard Whittington, who has served as director since 1996 and is based in Yeovil, leads the company amid these difficulties. Financial statements ending December 2023 show SFM Technology owed £2.1 million to creditors due within a year, up from £1.75 million in 2022. Despite this, the firm reported net assets valued at £1.76 million.

The workforce has also shrunk slightly, decreasing from 38 employees in 2022 to 33 in 2023. The future of SFM Technology, including the fate of its employees, remains uncertain as the administration process unfolds. Neither FRP Advisory nor SFM Technology have commented on the situation when approached by SomersetLive.

Additionally, the company’s registered address has been updated to c/o FRP Advisory Trading Limited, located at Churchill House, 26-30 Upper Marlborough Road, St Albans.
