A 45-year-old man from Bath was fined after an incident in which he had to be physically restrained for 15 minutes at a local hospital following his refusal to leave the premises. Arron Alexander appeared at Bath Magistrates' Court and admitted to using threatening, abusive, or insulting behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress.
The court was told by prosecutor Jenna Morgan that on 16 September last year, Alexander visited the hospital accompanied by a friend to deliver a bag of clothes for a patient. However, as part of his bail conditions, Alexander was prohibited from contacting the patient. When he inquired about the patient’s whereabouts, hospital staff informed him that the individual had been relocated.
After dropping off the clothing, Alexander was requested by security personnel to leave the hospital. At that point, he became aggressive and initially refused to comply. Magistrates heard that he told security staff, “I know where you live,” prompting the need for staff to restrain him on the floor until he calmed down.
Defending counsel Ned Kemp explained that Alexander had suffered a significant head injury just days before the event, which had affected his behaviour and memory. According to police, Alexander indicated at the scene that he had a brain bleed, and officers described him as appearing to be unwell. Mr Kemp added that Alexander’s recollection of the incident is very limited due to his injury.
The court also learned that Alexander had been admitted to hospital 30 times in the past year and had been cooperating with his GP. Importantly, he has not incurred any convictions since 2018.
Dressed in a grey hoodie and joggers, Alexander was ordered to pay a total of £552, comprising a £162 financial penalty, a £65 surcharge, and a £325 contribution towards costs. He will make repayments from his benefits at £40 per month.
