Ageing Concrete Prompts Temporary Closure of Trowbridge’s St Stephen’s Car Park

St Stephen’s Car Park in Trowbridge is set for a temporary closure as Wiltshire Council initiates urgent concrete repairs due to progressive deterioration. This step follows mounting safety concerns about the ageing structure.

Wiltshire Council has scheduled a two-day closure in early August to allow engineers to address critical repair needs, though exact dates are yet to be finalized.

The car park’s upper levels, 2A and 3A, have already been closed off as a precaution and will remain inaccessible after the latest repairs are completed. The council emphasizes that the entire structure is under constant surveillance, with further maintenance anticipated to ensure public safety.

Helen Belcher, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for assets, commented, “St Stephen’s Car Park is an ageing facility that serves the Trowbridge community and surrounding areas. Conducting these essential repairs ensures its continued use in the near term. We thank the public for their patience as we work to maintain safety.”

Belcher also noted the complexity of the car park’s long-term future. “Considering its condition and numerous influencing factors, including consultations with stakeholders, determining a sustainable solution will take time. Additional repairs may be needed down the line, and we will keep the community informed.”
