The former Battleaxes pub in Wraxall, Somerset, has been given a fresh new life as The Temperance House, thanks to a remarkable refurbishment by property developers and architects Studio Hive. After remaining closed since 2019, this historic Grade II listed building has been repurposed into a dynamic workspace and creative centre.
Studio Hive, a Bristol-based firm celebrating its tenth anniversary, has relocated its offices—and those of its sister business, Studio Hive Architects—into the revamped premises in North Somerset. The Temperance House now features modern workspaces complemented by a games room, a kitchen, and a brightly coloured mascot, Harry the rhino, welcoming visitors at the entrance.
Managing Director Jason Collard expressed enthusiasm about the move: “After ten years, transitioning from our Clifton offices to The Temperance House marks an exciting new chapter. We are proud to preserve an important building while creating a vibrant environment for work, meetings, retail, and community engagement across North Somerset and beyond.”

Beyond serving as the new headquarters for Studio Hive, The Temperance House is a key element of a larger regeneration plan in the area. Approved by North Somerset Council and supported by Wraxall & Failand Parish Council, the project includes a business centre, serviced accommodation, a community hub, and new housing developments.
The Temperance House’s name honors its origins as a temperance inn established in 1882 to serve workers from the nearby Tyntesfield Estate. The building’s historic charm has been carefully maintained throughout the renovation.
Studio Hive remains actively involved in major South West regional developments, including the redevelopment of Bristol’s Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone with new homes, student housing, and office spaces. The company is also leading the next phase of Weston-super-Mare RFC’s redevelopment, envisioning a modern clubhouse alongside a purpose-built NHS health centre and pharmacy.
