Abandoned Bridgwater Building Severely Damaged in Early Morning Fire

An abandoned two-storey building in Bridgwater’s Hamp area was badly damaged by a fire that broke out early on the morning of Saturday, February 28. The blaze, reported around 4 a.m., prompted multiple emergency calls to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Responding swiftly, fire crews dispatched four engines to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the fire primarily affecting the first floor of the derelict property. Initial efforts involved using a hose reel jet to prevent the flames from spreading further.

Crews then employed two breathing apparatuses, two hose reel jets, one main jet, and a triple extension ladder to bring the fire under control. The first floor sustained approximately 50 percent fire damage, while the ground floor was about 10 percent affected.

A statement from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service detailed the response: “Fire control received multiple calls about a derelict building fire in the Hamp area of Bridgwater. We mobilised two appliances from Bridgwater and, upon arrival, requested an additional two appliances from Burnham-on-Sea and Taunton along with a supporting officer. Our teams extinguished the fire efficiently, limiting the damage.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the quick action of the fire service prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby structures.
