A38/A368 Junction to Get Major Upgrade as Roundabout Installation Begins Amid Rising Traffic Concerns

Starting Monday, May 18, work begins to transform the heavily congested A38/A368 crossroads between Churchill and Langford into a modern roundabout, with roadworks expected to continue through next year. This vital upgrade by North Somerset Council responds to the junction’s current capacity issues, particularly during peak hours, and anticipates increased traffic due to planned housing developments.

The new roundabout will feature traffic lights to regulate vehicle flow and four pedestrian crossings—one on each exit and entrance—to enhance safety and accessibility for all road users. Each crossing will include audible and tactile signals to support visually impaired pedestrians.

Additionally, a dedicated bus-only lane will be constructed on the roundabout’s west side, facilitating smoother access for buses traveling along A368 Dinghurst Road to nearby bus stops. This lane will also be available to community minibuses, encouraging public and community transport use.

North Somerset Council stresses that the roadworks have been designed to keep disruptions to a minimum. The project will involve limited lane closures, two-way traffic signals, and a short period of night work scheduled for early 2027 near completion to finalize resurfacing, drainage improvements, and upgraded lighting.

Cllr Hugh Malyan, North Somerset’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, stated: “This scheme will improve traffic flow, reduce delays, enhance safety, and support sustainable travel options like walking, cycling, and bus transport. We have thoroughly considered local feedback, leading to stronger proposals incorporating controlled crossings with accessible features to increase confidence for all pedestrians. By combining these improvements with essential maintenance, we are ensuring maximum value for residents across North Somerset.”

The upgrade comes as North Somerset prepares for significant population growth. The council’s 2025 public consultation plan outlines nearly 24,500 new homes over 15 years. Just in Churchill and Langford, proposals include almost 600 new homes across multiple sites, intensifying the need for efficient and safe transport infrastructure.
