The A370 in North Somerset will be closed for nearly a week in April to allow for significant improvement works aimed at boosting safety and accessibility in Backwell. From Monday, April 13 to Friday, April 17, the road will be shut daily from 7am to 7pm as crews carry out upgrades along West Town Road.
The project includes the installation of a new 20mph speed limit zone, the construction of six new bus shelters, a pedestrian crossing, refreshed road markings and signage, and the removal of overgrown vegetation. These measures are designed to create safer and more sustainable travel conditions for all road users.
Councillor Hugh Malyan, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, emphasized the importance of these improvements. “This programme will greatly enhance the safety and condition of West Town Road while supporting our broader vision for a safer, greener district. Maintaining road infrastructure, improving crossings, and reducing speed limits helps build more resilient neighbourhoods for residents and businesses alike.”
