A Seaside Slice of Italy: Il Michelangelo in Weston-super-Mare

While the sea view at Weston-super-Mare may not rival the sparkling waters of the Amalfi Coast, Il Michelangelo transports diners straight to an Italian summer holiday with its vibrant menu and inviting atmosphere. Sitting on the outdoor terrace with a chilled Aperol spritz in hand, guests can relax and savor a selection of classic Italian dishes that evoke the warmth and charm of the Mediterranean.

Il Michelangelo has built a reputation as one of Weston-super-Mare’s more refined dining venues, where patrons dress for the occasion rather than resorting to casual beachwear. Inside, the spacious restaurant features elegant touches such as twinkling ceiling spotlights, blue LED accents, crisp white linen tablecloths, and a striking open kitchen framed by large Michelangelo murals. Attentive, smartly dressed staff ensure every table is well cared for in a lively yet comfortable setting.

On a recent visit, the bustling restaurant was alive with celebrations, from 18th birthdays to 80th, marked by colorful helium balloons and joyful gatherings. The menu strikes a perfect balance between beloved staples and exciting new offerings.

I savored the smoky 8oz “bistecca” sirloin steak, grilled to a perfect rosy pink and served with crisp, salty chips and a robust peppercorn sauce for a small extra charge. A new starter of burrata invernale delighted with its creamy burrata paired with slices of Parma ham, rich heritage tomatoes, basil pesto, and a delightful rye and almond crumble adding a subtle crunch.

Next time, I look forward to trying the Zozza pizza, topped with mozzarella, red onion, scamorza, Tuscan sausage, and oregano, and the starter of slow-cooked pork ribs marinated in red wine, barbecue sauce, chili, and fennel seeds.

Dessert was a highlight: torta della nona, a Tuscan tart with crisp pastry, zesty lemon custard, almonds, and pine nuts, a deliciously crisp and tangy finish.

Returning to Il Michelangelo felt like coming home to old-fashioned hospitality combined with authentic Italian cuisine. Welcomed warmly by staff and the manager, it’s clear why this beloved restaurant remains popular with locals, holidaymakers, and day-trippers alike. With new dishes to explore, it promises to be a summer destination for genuine Italian flavors right on the Somerset coast.
