As a reporter attending the Glastonbury Festival this summer, I was eagerly anticipating the lineup, yet it was the genuine acts of kindness from fellow festival-goers that left the most lasting impression. Despite not catching all the planned acts, interactions with various individuals, from activists to porridge sellers, stood out during my time at the festival.
The spirit of generosity was evident when I found myself shivering in the cold of a June night and an American neighbor offered me his clothes. Reciprocating this kindness, I continued the chain of goodwill by assisting a colleague with sun cream and aiding others with the festival’s peculiar amenities.
The festival’s sense of community was further highlighted through the presence of support services such as the Samaritans and the sensory deprivation tents, providing individuals with a reprieve from the overwhelming atmosphere when needed. The genuine connections formed were exemplified when a nuclear disarmament activist recognized me amidst a bustling crowd and engaged in a heartfelt exchange.

As I bid farewell to Glastonbury, it was the collective act of a stranger offering to assist me with carrying my belongings that encapsulated the essence of the festival – a spirit of camaraderie that overshadowed the star-studded lineup and musical performances.
This experience has led me to contemplate the possibility of recreating such a sense of unity beyond the festival grounds.
