A Charming Countryside Pub Hidden Next to the M4 Motorway

The hospitality industry is facing tough challenges, with over a thousand bars, restaurants, pubs, and clubs closing since last October. But stepping into The White Horse at Hambrook, you’d hardly believe it. On a busy Saturday afternoon, this delightful countryside pub was buzzing with activity, full of locals and visitors alike.

Despite its close proximity to junction 19 of the M4 and a short walk from Winterbourne, The White Horse feels like a peaceful rural gem. Its charming 19th-century barn, once a brewery malt house, played host to a lively engagement party, while the spacious garden overlooking the Bradley Brook river was filled with drinkers soaking up the atmosphere.

Inside, the pub’s rustic character shines through. Warm woodburners glow at either end of the room, highlighting the bare wooden floors, plush leather sofas, and cozy armchairs. Walls decked with hunting scenes, dog portraits, pheasant-printed cushions, and mounted antlers complete the authentic countryside vibe. Even the farmhouse tables are lit by candlelight nestled in wax-coated gin bottles, creating a welcoming ambiance.

The bar offers an excellent selection of local beverages, including Thatchers ciders, Butcombe bitter, and the house favorite – Hop Union Hambrook Ale at £5 a pint. The full menu spans starters, main courses, burgers, and ciabatta sandwiches, catering to a variety of tastes and budgets. Highlights from my visit included the mojo fillet steak with chimichurri (£10), tender, pink meat bathed in a spicy, herby sauce, and the chicken skewers (£24) served with a fresh Greek salad, crispy halloumi fries, and subtly spiced rice.

Service was attentive and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. Families relaxed over school holiday lunches, locals caught up over pints, and the overall vibe was one of warmth and community.

If you’re tempted to stay longer, you can look forward to The White Horse Fest on 25 August from 3pm to 10pm. This bank holiday celebration promises live music, DJs, a barbecue, and cocktails with tickets available via the pub’s website. Given my experience, it’s an event not to miss.

Whether you’re passing by or making a special trip, The White Horse at Hambrook is a countryside pub that offers genuine charm in an unexpected location.
