225 New Homes Proposed for Bridgwater’s Southern Edge

Bridgwater’s southern edge is set to see the addition of over 200 new homes, as Bloor Homes South West advances its plans for the Bridgwater Gateway site. This development marks the latest phase in a decade of significant growth in the area, following the construction of the Stockmoor and Wilstock villages.

The initial proposals, submitted as a screening request, outline the construction of 225 homes situated between Rhode Lane and Hamp Brook. Somerset Council is anticipated to review and decide on these preliminary plans within the coming weeks. Subject to approval, more comprehensive plans will be submitted before Christmas.

The new development would be located west of the existing Risemoor Road estate and adjacent to the Wilstock estate. Residents will benefit from proximity to the planned Wilstock Primary School on Campion Way, scheduled to open in September 2027. Access to the site will be facilitated by a new T-junction on Rhode Lane prioritizing traffic from the new homes. Additionally, a secondary pedestrian access point will be enhanced at the western end, improving connectivity to the Durleigh Gardens estate through an upgraded public right of way.

Representatives from Blue Fox Planning, acting on behalf of Bloor Homes, emphasize a phased approach to the project. The first phase, comprising about 100 dwellings, will extend the existing settlement edge, with careful consideration given to the site’s topography. The development plans incorporate open spaces and green infrastructure corridors designed to preserve key public views and rights of way. These measures aim to enhance the local landscape and deliver ecological improvements, ensuring net biodiversity gains post-development.

Bloor Homes is already active in Bridgwater, presently constructing the 237-home Evergreen Parade development on King’s Drive. This project forms one of the final stages of the North East Bridgwater housing allocation under the Sedgemoor Local Plan. Moreover, Bloor intends to commence the Staplegrove urban extension in Taunton soon, a substantial project that will add 713 homes and commercial spaces along the A358 Staplegrove Road.

Somerset Council is expected to deliver a decision on the screening request by late summer. If approved, the developer aims to submit detailed planning documents by Christmas, moving the project closer to fruition and continuing the ongoing expansion of Bridgwater’s southern neighborhoods.
