£15 Million Revamp Plans Submitted for Yeovil’s Octagon Theatre, Work Set to Start Next Financial Year

The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil is poised for a dramatic £15 million overhaul following the submission of ambitious refurbishment plans by Somerset Council and Yeovil Town Council. The beloved venue, closed since April 2023, could soon reopen its doors thanks to significant investment aimed at revitalizing its facilities and enhancing visitor experience.

The proposed transformation includes extensive renovations to the theatre’s structure, upgraded front-of-house areas, improved energy efficiency measures, and greater accessibility throughout the venue—for both performers and audience members. If these plans receive approval, construction is expected to commence during the 2026/2027 financial year.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities along with Culture and Equalities, highlighted the importance of this milestone. “Submitting these plans allows us to envision the future of the Octagon Theatre. This public project, funded by Government resources, demands thorough planning and a solid business case to ensure it proceeds on time and within budget,” she said. “Our goal is to create a modernized theatre that everyone across Somerset and beyond can enjoy.”

Echoing this sentiment, Yeovil Town Council Leader Councillor Andy Soughton reflected on the theatre’s vital role in the community over the past five decades. “The Octagon has been central to Yeovil’s cultural life, attracting audiences from across the region and supporting local businesses. This investment will secure its future and significantly enhance it as a premier entertainment venue,” he added.

The financial package behind the project is a collaboration of funds: £10 million from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), £3.75 million from Yeovil Town Council—which includes a loan—alongside additional contributions exceeding £1.25 million from ticket levies, fundraising efforts, and planning gain contributions via Somerset Council.

Currently, the planning application is open for public comment, inviting supporters, objectors, and general feedback during the consultation period. The final decision on the proposal is scheduled to be made by Monday, 16 February.
