The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil, closed since April 2023, is on track for a major £15 million refurbishment aimed at revitalizing the cherished cultural hub. Somerset Council and Yeovil Town Council have submitted detailed plans to overhaul the venue, focusing on enhanced front-of-house facilities, improved energy efficiency, and upgraded accessibility for both performers and audiences.
Subject to approval, construction is expected to commence during the 2026/2027 financial year. The project is largely funded through a £10 million grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), supplemented by £3.75 million from Yeovil Town Council via loans and other sources, with an additional £1.25 million coming from ticket levies, fundraising efforts, and contributions from Somerset Council’s 106 agreements.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Member for Communities, Housing Revenue Account, Culture and Equalities at Somerset Council, highlighted the significance of this milestone: “This is a major milestone for this exciting project. It’s fantastic to see the plans being submitted and to envision the renewed Octagon Theatre. Our priority is to deliver a modernized, accessible venue on time and within budget for everyone in Somerset and beyond.”
