The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil is poised for a £15 million transformation following plans submitted by Somerset Council and Yeovil Town Council. Closed since April 2023, the theatre is set to undergo extensive renovations designed to modernize the venue, improve energy efficiency, and enhance accessibility for all visitors and performers.
The refurbishment plans include upgrades to the front-of-house areas, as well as improvements behind the scenes, ensuring the theatre meets contemporary standards and can continue serving the community effectively for years to come. Should these plans gain approval, construction is scheduled to commence in the 2026/2027 financial year.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Housing Revenue Account, Culture and Equalities, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “This is a major milestone for this exciting project. It’s fantastic to see the plans being submitted and get a glimpse of what the Octagon Theatre will look like. We are dedicated to delivering an improved theatre that is modern, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone in Somerset and beyond.”

Yeovil Town Council Leader Councillor Andy Soughton highlighted the theatre’s importance: “For 50 years, the Octagon Theatre has been a cornerstone of Yeovil’s cultural life. It draws people from the surrounding areas, providing an economic boost and a venue that unites the community through entertainment. Our goal is to ensure it remains fit for purpose and significantly enhanced as a premier venue.”
Funding for the project includes £10 million from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), £3.75 million from Yeovil Town Council—mainly through a loan—and over £1.25 million generated from ticket levies, fundraising efforts, and contributions via Somerset Council’s Section 106 agreements.
The planning application is currently open for public comment, allowing supporters, objectors, and the community to share their views. The council expects to reach a decision by Monday, February 16.
