£15 Million Investment Approved to Reopen Yeovil’s Iconic Octagon Theatre

Plans for a £15 million redevelopment project to reopen The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil have received official approval. The beloved venue, closed since April 2023, is set to undergo extensive renovations starting in the 2026/2027 financial year.

Somerset Council has outlined ambitious upgrades including a renewed auditorium, enhanced rehearsal spaces, improved energy efficiency, more accessible restroom facilities, and increased front-of-house revenue potential. These improvements will safeguard the structural integrity of the 50-year-old building, ensuring it remains a vibrant cultural hub for generations to come.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts commented, “Securing planning permission marks a significant milestone. We now have the green light to advance this exciting project, creating a modern, accessible theatre that will serve Somerset well into the future. We are committed to delivering this major public investment on time and within budget.”

Yeovil Town Council Leader Andy Soughton added, “The Octagon Theatre has been central to Yeovil’s cultural life for half a century. This planning approval is wonderful news for our community. The theatre’s upgrades will not only strengthen Yeovil’s cultural offerings but also support the local economy and provide an enhanced venue for performers and audiences alike.”

Funding for the project includes £10 million from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, £3.75 million from Yeovil Town Council—sourced through loans and reserves—and £1.25 million from ticket levies, fundraising, and Somerset Council contributions.

This positive development coincides with other encouraging news for Yeovil, where thousands of local jobs were saved following a £1 billion government contract awarded to defence contractor Leonardo, securing employment for around 3,000 people in the area.
