Work is underway on a landmark £15 million health centre and GP surgery in Weston-super-Mare, set to replace the existing Graham Road surgery. Located on Sunnyside Road North, the new facility will serve up to 12,500 patients in a modern and accessible healthcare environment.
This initiative marks the first phase of an ambitious regeneration plan backed by North Somerset Council, which has generously provided the land for development. Beyond healthcare, the project encompasses approximately 200 one and two-bedroom apartments on land formerly part of the Weston-super-Mare Rugby Club grounds. Additionally, a new primary school is planned on the Recreation Ground site to support the growing community.
Celebrating over 140 years of history, the Weston-super-Mare Rugby Club will also benefit from this scheme. Future upgrades include a new clubhouse featuring a function and meeting room, a gym, physio facilities, and revamped changing rooms available to both club members and the public.

The Southwest team of RED Construction Group will oversee the build, working closely with developers and architects StudioHIVE, partners Atlas Land, North Somerset Council, the NHS, and the Rugby Club. Planning permission was granted in November 2022, and construction is slated to begin this October on part of the Rugby Club’s current car park.
North Somerset Council leader Cllr Mike Bell expressed enthusiasm for the project: “This new health centre addresses a long-awaited need for modern healthcare facilities in Weston-super-Mare. It will offer better access to care for the local population and support early intervention to improve health outcomes.
“Our council is dedicated to creating thriving, healthy communities through essential infrastructure, and this centre’s opening in 2027 will be a milestone achievement.”
Weston-super-Mare MP Dan Aldridge shared his support: “This development represents a massive leap forward. Residents deserve first-class healthcare and community facilities, and this project delivers precisely that, alongside new homes and a secure future for our rugby club.”
Dr. Joanne Medhurst, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board, highlighted the project’s significance: “With Weston’s population growing, strengthening neighborhood health services is a top priority. This new centre embodies the NHS’s commitment to providing high-quality care within the community.”
James Howard, Development Director at StudioHIVE, said: “Starting this project is a proud moment. It lays the foundation for Weston Gateway’s vision—a modern hub blending healthcare, housing, and sports facilities that will serve residents well into the future.
“We have collaborated closely with public and private partners, including North Somerset Council and the NHS, to bring this bold vision to life, always mindful to minimize disruption during construction.”
Alex Larkin, Chair of Weston-super-Mare Rugby Football Club, remarked: “As we enter our 150th season, it’s fitting that this development begins now. Although the initial phase focuses on healthcare, it paves the way for a comprehensive redevelopment of the club’s facilities.
“Plans include a clubhouse overlooking the main pitch, with meeting spaces, a gym, physio areas, and expanded changing rooms accessible both to players and the community—inspiring a stronger future on and off the field.”
