10,000-Capacity Arena at Tropicana Weston-Super-Mare Gets Green Light

Plans to convert Weston-super-Mare’s famous former lido, the Tropicana, into a major 10,000-capacity arena have been approved by councillors. This ambitious redevelopment will create one of the largest live music venues in the South West, breathing new life into the iconic site that once hosted Banksy’s Dismaland installation.

Global entertainment giant Live Nation will operate the venue under a 25-year lease agreement, with a reopening targeted for 2028. The company plans to deliver a “world-class live entertainment” program similar in stature to its east coast venues that have hosted major acts like Tom Jones, Queens of the Stone Age, and Madness.

North Somerset Council’s vote on May 12 sealed the deal, following a brief delay to renegotiate contract terms amid concerns about potential future costs to the council. Council leader Mike Bell expressed optimism, highlighting the arena’s potential to boost regional footfall, increase hotel occupancy, support local businesses, and create jobs throughout the community.

“The Tropicana will become an all-year event venue, driving economic growth and opportunities in our region,” Bell said. He reassured that neither the council nor Live Nation is irreversibly committed until planning permissions and licensing approvals are secured, and that additional financial safeguards remain in place.

The agreement also introduces a “restoration levy” on tickets to fund ongoing maintenance of the venue. While councillors acknowledged the risks involved in such a large regeneration project, many viewed the initiative as essential to preventing further deterioration and capturing economic opportunities for the town.

Live Nation’s representative Eddie Kemsley shared enthusiasm about the partnership, underscoring plans to engage local businesses and the community to ensure the arena’s success.

Despite broad support—reflected in the 34-6 council vote—some councillors voiced concerns about financial risks and questioned prioritizing commercial projects amidst recent council tax increases and service cuts. Nevertheless, the decision marks a significant milestone toward revitalizing Weston-super-Mare’s cultural and entertainment landscape.

As the project advances through planning and construction phases, further consultation with councillors and the public will help shape the final design and operational details. With determination and collaboration, the Tropicana is poised to become a vibrant centerpiece for live entertainment and community engagement in the years ahead.
