100 New Pitches Proposed at Somerset Campsite for Hinkley Point C Workers

A Somerset campsite near Fiddington is set to potentially expand by 100 new pitches to accommodate the growing workforce at Hinkley Point C, pending approval of new planning applications.

As EDF Energy anticipates a surge in personnel at the nuclear power station—projected to reach 15,000 workers by 2028—the need for additional accommodation has become critical. Currently, many workers reside in caravans at Mill Farm Camping and Caravan Park, strategically located halfway between Bridgwater and the Quantock Hills.

The operator, NNB Generation Company (HPC) Ltd, has submitted an application to Somerset Council to extend the site’s capacity by 100 pitches designed specifically for power station staff. A decision on the proposal is expected by early autumn.

Mill Farm already hosts 443 touring pitches, with most available year-round. The proposed expansion would utilize agricultural land east of the private road leading to the campsite. Along with the new pitches, plans include constructing a welfare building featuring showers and toilets, plus a new recreation area in the southeast corner.

Each of the additional pitches would be available to Hinkley Point C workers until December 31, 2031, providing much-needed relief for the local housing market. A spokesperson from PCL Planning, representing the applicant, highlighted that this expansion would ease pressure on private rental housing and offers the advantage of an established site well connected to the project’s bus route.

The site benefits from proximity to the A39 and easy access to regular shuttle services running between the campsite, the Cannington park and ride facility, and Bridgwater. These transport links support convenient commuting options for workers.

The planned expansion not only aims to support the growing workforce but also represents an investment in the site’s long-term viability. It is envisioned that, post-construction, the campsite can continue to serve tourism purposes, leveraging improvements made during the Hinkley Point C development.

Meanwhile, Bridgwater faces additional rental demand due to the development of a new gigafactory within the Gravity enterprise zone, located between Puriton and Woolavington, underscoring the importance of effective workforce accommodation solutions.

Somerset Council’s decision on Mill Farm’s expansion will clarify whether the approval process will be handled publicly by its Planning Committee North or via delegated officer powers.
